A Milestone to be Celebrated – The LCI
Master Site Plan and Phase 1 Proposal are Under Way!

Halleluiah!  An important goal has been reached in the ministerial journey of LCI; a Master Site Plan, that can guide our future development, is ready for your consideration and review.  This planning process has sought answers to the many facility needs expressed within LCI.  The outcome is a site plan which the Interim Building Committee believes provides an effective map for future development of our site in the next decades as we seek to grow in our ability to minister to the needs of LCI and our community.

This plan was presented on Sunday, April 6 by Tim Mattheis, a partner in Wenell, Mattheis and Bowe (WMB), the architectural firm LCI retained for this project.  WMB has 34 years experience providing architectural services to 250+ congregations in California.  After this initial presentation, you will have opportunities to share your thoughts and questions by participating in small group discussions (dates and locations to be announced April 6).  On Sunday, May 18 the congregation voted to go ahead with the Master Plan and to move ahead to develop detailed plans for Phase 1.

What is Phase 1?  Based on feedback from the initial Congregational meeting last August and the Columbarium Committee, WMB has prepared a floor plan that includes a columbarium, sanctuary, open narthex meeting area, ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant bathrooms, a nursery, a multipurpose/music room and substantial storage areas.  In addition they have prepared initial artistic drawings that provide an external visual view of how this facility might look from different directions.  We need to emphasize these exterior drawings are drafts meant to assist us in visualizing how this new facility could appear.  Decisions about internal and external appearance will be determined during development of final plans for submission to the Davis Planning Commission.

Phase 1 will require much additional planning and input to ensure the final product effectively projects the desired image and needs of LCI.  In addition to formally constituting a building committee and the necessary building subcommittees (i.e. finance…), we will depend heavily on the current standing committees of LCI to contribute to this process.  This is an important opportunity for you to join the effort to help move this planning forward.

It is critical that we remember and acknowledge the contributions from all LCI committees and their members in completing the Needs Assessment Survey at the beginning of this planning process.  The proposal you will see April 6 would not have happened without the thoughtful and prayerful input received through this survey. It identified many needs and wishes for LCI’s ministry and has served as the principal source of information used by WMB in developing the site plan and phase 1 proposal.  We are indebted to LCI’s committees for their insights and patience during this lengthy but productive process!

As a reminder, the Interim Building Committee was charged by Council with the responsibility to serve as an interface with WMB in translating and distilling the Needs Assessment Survey into possibilities.  Over many months various “footprint ideas” for our site were reviewed and modified considering the needs of LCI, parameters of our site, our neighbors and city requirements.  The investment in thoughtful discussion has been extensive and very productive.  We believe the result is a sound long term plan for LCI.

With the arrival of so many new families in University Village* in the coming years, LCI will be well positioned to provide them an avenue to Christ’s light.  This Master Plan provides a thoughtful road map to help us meet that and other opportunities to guide the development of our ministries.

Sincerely in Christ,

Interim Building Committee
