Christian Education Opportunities

LCI provides a wide range of Christian education opportunities for children, teens and adults. Learning together helps us stay centered on Christ as we grow in faith. We offer Sunday morning classes for all ages and additional learning opportunities during the week. Our education program incorporates Festival Celebrations and includes a First Communion class and instruction for young people to become confirmed members of the church. All are warmly invited to participate in LCI’s vital education ministry on a regular or occasional basis. Visitors are always welcome.

From September through June, LCI’s rotation workshop Sunday School program, Together in the Boat, provides fun and meaningful Christian educations experiences for children pre-school through sixth grade.  The program focuses on one lesson each month, with lessons arranged in theme-blocks lasting approximately one year.  The first unit was entitled, “Following,” and monthly lesson topics are Noah’s Ark, the Beatitudes, Christmas through the Eyes of Mary, Adam and Eve, the Calling of the Disciples, the Anointing of David, Peter’s First Easter, the Great Commission, Elijah and Elisha, Joseph in the Land of Many Colors, and Abraham and God’s Covenant.

Children are grouped into four classes by age.  Each week, classes "rotate" to one of four different workshops: Art, Performing Arts, Project Center, and Temple.  In each workshop, an activity leader guides students, using different learning media to understand and explore the monthly lesson.  By spending four weeks on one lesson, children can delve more deeply into what each Bible story offers and make connections between the lesson themes and their own lives. This approach also gives parents more time to discuss and explore lesson concepts together as a family.

The rotation model also provides a chance for more adults to participate as Sunday school leaders by making a four-week commitment to work with children in an area where spiritual gifts are the strongest.  Leaders can share their gifts as storytellers, puppet-masters, artists, singers, musicians, directors, actors, photographers, cooks, builders, etc.  Having a variety of leaders shows children that there are many different ways to walk a path of faith.

FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS

Festival celebrations throughout the church year mark faith milestones for children. On Pentecost Sunday the Rite of Confirmation is held, and on Reformation Sunday LCI presents fourth graders with Bibles and presents their parents with Luther's Small Catechism. Other church festivals also are celebrated throughout the year.

FIRST COMMUNION CLASS

First Communion class, "A Place For You," is offered annually. Children age 6 and their parents are invited to attend. Older and younger children and their parents also are welcome if they feel the class would be beneficial. For 2006, the Rite of First Communion is celebrated on Sunday, September 10. Families may decide when their children are ready to start receiving Communion. Questions can be directed to the church office.

CONFIRMATION

LCI and Davis Lutheran Church jointly offer a confirmation program for seventh and eighth graders. This program, "Develop, Discover, Do It!" is an intentional time to encounter the gospel of Jesus Christ. The program is intended to develop students' faith journey through community for the purpose of growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ. DLC Pastor Jeff Irwin and our LCI Pastor lead the class together with parent volunteers and small group leaders. Students are encouraged to bring their friends to this lively class, which is held Sundays from 4:30 - 6:00 and includes dinner. Classes are held at LCI or DLC from September through April, and eighth graders participate in a Confirmation Service on Pentecost Sunday in May.

The “Book Group” meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month for informal discussions on books dealing with faith issues, for individuals and the Church as a whole. Occasional special educational forums are held on Sunday evenings and Saturdays. Additionally, a men’s fellowship group meets on the first and third Thursdays in the South Room from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., and a women’s quilting group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., also in the South Room. Bible Studies are offered several times during the year -- please check the web page or the newsletters for details.

MT. CROSS BIBLE CAMP (VBS)

Mt. Cross Bible Camp, operated by Lutheran Outdoor Ministries provides the children of Davis a wonderful fun and spiritually-filled week of Day Camp. LCI partners with Davis Lutheran Church, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and Davis Community Church to host this annual summer event for children age 3-18. Families and children look forward to attending this camp each summer and older children and teens participate as Day Camp Volunteers. The four churches take turns organizing and hosting the camp each summer, and ALL children and young adults living in Davis are welcome to attend!
